Today we toured the Amish Farm and House in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. Very interesting! This was a house first lived in by Mennonites, then Quakers, then Amish. In 1958 it became a tourist attraction. Our guide was a retired school teacher from the area. She told us that they have their own one-room schoolhouses to the 8th grade. After she told us that they don't have any homework, Abby told me "I wish I was half Amish, half human."
This is a typical kitchen. No electricity. They use a coal or wood stove, a treadle sewing machine, and oil lamps. No phone, computer, tv, etc.
Amish clothing. They only use solid fabric, no prints. They wear different clothing for the various stages of life they are at. The men are clean shaven until the marry, and then they never shave their beard again. The women never cut their hair. The women are not allowed buttons on their clothes (it would be adornment), so they pin the aprons to their dresses. Hence the word "pinafore".

This is really interesting about the Amish. I want to take my kids there too! That was great foresight as well with giving the kids souvenir money ahead of time. We've had those trips where kids are begging at every stop and you are spending tons on t-shirts, etc.. Very fun!
It takes a bit to make a giggle come out of me when I am alone, reading blogs. The "half-Amish, half-human" comment got me! How funny! I love your blog!
